Inspiring Year 12 Geographers

Recently alumni Penny Clarke returned to Upton to speak to Year 12 Geographers about her pathway after A Levels. Penny went through a comprehensive presentation detailing her journey to her current role as a Whale Scientist at the British Antarctic Survey, where she is working on her PhD studying cetacean mass strandings and ocean health from space.
Penny explained to the Year 12 that her path to her current role wasn't linear and through determination, persistence and hard work she is now in her dream role, recently visiting South Georgia and Antarctica as part of her research and presenting at conferences in Australia.
When Penny first left Upton she worked with the ski company Interski for 2 years, before studying Geography at University of Aberystwyth including a research trip to Svalbard, in the Arctic. Since her degree Penny has worked in a range of roles from Personnel and Quality Assurance Manager, events managements, to banking, adding further to her skillset.
Year 12 asked lots of questions and they also had fun using satellite imagery to identify wildlife from space. Thank you to Penny for coming in and inspiring our Year 12 Geographers.
